Power Windows Explained: Bezier Masks, Fake Light & Subject Isolation

In traditional high-end post-production suites like DaVinci Resolve, Power Windows are the bread and butter of cinematic image control. They allow colorists to selectively relight scenes, guide the viewer's eye, and sculpt skin tones without affecting the rest of the frame.

However, complex node graphs and steep learning curves often intimidate editors who just want fast, clean results.

What is a Mask (or Power Window)?#

A mask is a geometric or freehand boundary that isolates a specific region of your video clip. Once isolated, any transformation or effect can be applied exclusively inside (or inverted, outside) that region:

  • Exposure & Lift: Brighten faces in underlit interviews.
  • Directional Vignette: Gently darken non-essential edges to create depth.
  • Fake Volumetric Light: Cast golden morning light through windows or tree leaves.
  • Background Desaturation: Make colorful subjects pop while cooling down distracting backgrounds.

Practical Masterclass: Relighting a Flat Interview Clip#

Let's walk through transforming a flat, dreary webcam or smartphone clip into a cinematic, 3D talking head.

Step 1: Create an Elliptical Face Window

  1. Select your clip in the timeline.
  2. Open the Color & Mask panel in the inspector.
  3. Click Add MaskEllipse.
  4. Drag the handles over the subject's face and upper torso.

Step 2: Soften the Feathering

A sharp mask boundary looks fake and amateurish.

  • Increase Feather Radius to 40px – 65px.
  • The transition between the mask and the rest of the frame should be completely invisible to the naked eye.

Step 3: Dial in Exposure & Temperature

  • Inside the mask: Boost Midtones by +12% and add a tiny touch of warmth (+250K).
  • Duplicate the mask, click Invert, and drop Highlights by -15%.
  • Suddenly, the subject pops forward with dimensional depth!

Creating Fake Cinematic Light Rays#

To add that dreamy golden-hour look to interior or forest scenes:

  1. Create an angled Linear Mask cutting across the upper corner of the frame.
  2. Set feathering to 120px.
  3. Boost Highlights and add a soft orange-gold tint.
  4. Add a subtle 0.05 Hz flicker keyframe to emulate organic sunlight passing through swaying branches.

You now have a production-grade lighting rig simulated directly on your timeline!
